Marrakesh is more than just a city. It is a pearl polished by history and its tradition of hospitality which, for centuries, has known how to welcome visitors.
Marrakech is known as the 'Red City' thanks to the blush-coloured walls that surround it. Constructed in the 12th century, the bricks are made from tabia, which is a mixture of red mud and water from the Hazou plains. But anyone who’s been to the city will know that its nickname doesn’t do it justice. Red is just one colour in Marrakech’s kaleidoscope.
You'll get the best feel for this in the city’s souks. Bright spices are piled up in pyramids, freshly-dyed carpets hang from the sides of stalls, and silver lamps glint with the promise of a genie inside. It’s a similar story in Jemaa el-Fna, Africa’s biggest square. Ten times busier than Piccadilly Circus at rush hour, the market place is alive with snake charmers, story tellers and potion sellers.
Away from the bustling medina area, Marrakech wears a cloak of green. The region around the city is carpeted with gardens. And they’re no ordinary public parks, either. The Menara gardens were built by royalty in the 12th century and the Jardin Majorelle was owned by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, until his death in 2008.
Erfoud is a town in the desert, about 6 hours to the east of Ouarzazate. It has dusty red buildings and a ghost town atmosphere but is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Morocco. It is a place that many tourists stay in when visiting the dunes at Merzouga, or to visit Rissani – the last oasis village with an interesting palace.
The road to Er-Rachidia has some of the most spectacular scenery of the area, with ancient Berber fortress set in palm groves for as far as the eye can see.
Erfoud is a popular destination for filmmakers, with beautiful views of the Sahara and sand dunes on its doorstep. Films such as March or Die (1977 directed by Dick Richards), The Mummy (1999 directed by Stephen Sommers) and Dick Richards more recent Prince of Persia (2010) were all filmed in this area.
Tineghir is at the eastern end of the Dades Valley, with the High Atlas Mountains rising up behind it to the North, and the Jbel Sarhro Mountains spread out at its feet to the South. Originally just the name for the town, the area now known as Tineghir has expanded over time to include all the villages in one of the most beautiful Oases of Southern Morocco.
The main city of Tineghir (Baladia Tineghir) has 36 000 inhabitants, but the oasis as a whole totalled 86 500 inhabitants according to the 2004 Census. Tineghir, as with the region of Ouarzazate, is populated by the Amazighs (Berber people), and is at the centre of the Oasis. The lush palm grove covers a stretch of about 30 miles, varying in width between 500 to 1500 metres along the River Todra.
Zagora is a town in the valley of the Draa River in a region called the Souss-Massa-Draâ in south-eastern Morocco. It is flanked by the Zagora Mountain, from which the town got its name. Originally it was called ‘Tazagourt’, Berber for ‘twinpeaks’, referring to the form of the mountain. In old European maps Zagora Mountain is already indicated although the town itself was only built in the 20th century.
On the top of the Zagora mountain the remains of an Almoravid fortress can still be seen, and there is an ongoing dispute as to the exact location of the former Almoravid mosque. A well known sign at the town border states “Timbouctou 52 jours”, the supposed time it takes to get to Timbuktu, Mali on foot or by camel!
